Equity Leader David Sciarra named to National Education Commission

 David Sciarra, Executive Director of Education Law Center (ELC), was selected to serve on the national Education Equity and Excellence Commission, newly established by the U.S. Department of Education (ED), as instructed by Congress. The Commission will hold public meetings and hearings across the nation to gather information to recommend ways school finance can be improved to increase equity and achievement. In May 2012, the Commission will issue a report to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Congress.

  • "Seize the Moment!" Wade Henderson Urges Educational Equity
    Wade Henderson, President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, was recently honored by the Education Law Center with the Education Justice Award for national leadership in educational equity. Before receiving the award at a special reception, Mr. Henderson delivered ELC's annual Education Justice Lecture at Rutgers University's Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.
  • Voucher Program Violates LA Constitution, Supreme Court Declares
    On May 7, 2013, the Louisiana Supreme Court declared that state’s voucher program unconstitutional under the state constitution. The plaintiffs, in Louisiana Federation of Teachers, et al. v. State, challenged a senate resolution and Act 2, both passed during the 2012 legislative session.
  • Voucher Schools Must Not Discriminate Against Students with Disabilities
    In a letter released this week, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) told Wisconsin that the state must ensure that students with disabilities who seek to attend or are currently enrolled in the state's voucher schools must "not encounter discrimination on the basis of their disabilities."
  • Online K-12 Schools: Low Performance, High Costs
    "Virtual" schools drain millions in public funds, with limited oversight. A national study, released by the National Education Policy Center (NEPC), comprehensively reviews 311 full-time "virtual schools" operating in the U.S. and finds serious and systemic problems with them.
  • Resistance to Equity is Deep, Long-standing and Bipartisan

    State leaders have steadfastly resisted and rarely embraced equity in educational opportunity for millions of the schoolchildren whose rights they are sworn to uphold. Recent events in Colorado, Connecticut, and New York underscore that, yet again, this resistance is deep and bipartisan.
